Starrus Foundation

Who We ARE

Starrus Foundation is a W80 Public Utility Services nonprofit dedicated to delivering clean, safe, and sustainable drinking water to individuals and communities in need. Rooted in our family’s ties to Kitui, Kenya—but committed to serving underserved communities across Africa and around the world—we design and implement reliable water infrastructure that strengthens health, dignity, and economic opportunity.

What We Do

We focus on long-term, utility-grade solutions such as solar-powered boreholes, high-capacity purification systems, prepaid water kiosks, and community water points. By combining modern technology with community-led management, we ensure that families can access clean, affordable water every day—not just at the moment a project is installed.

Our Vision

Our vision is a world where every community has dependable access to clean, safe drinking water through sustainable public utility systems. Through innovation, education, and local capacity-building, we work alongside communities to operate and maintain their own water services, paving the way for better health outcomes, stronger education, and improved quality of life for generations to come.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

Our Goals

1. Universal Access: Ensure reliable access to clean, safe drinking water for underserved communities by developing sustainable water utility solutions that can be scaled and replicated.

2. Health Improvement: Improve health outcomes by reducing waterborne diseases through consistent access to treated drinking water and basic sanitation services.

3. Educational & Economic Empowerment:  Remove water-related barriers that keep children from school and families from earning income, enabling learners to attend class and adults to pursue work and enterprise instead of walking long distances for unsafe water.

4. Community Well-Being & Resilience:  Strengthen overall community well-being by building resilient water systems that support households, schools, clinics, and local businesses—contributing to healthier, more stable and prosperous communities.

.

Our Objectives

1. Water System Development: Design and install solar-powered wells, boreholes, storage, and distribution systems in communities lacking reliable water access, using data and community input to select locations that maximize impact and reach.

2. Water Quality & Sanitation Services: Provide ongoing water-quality monitoring, treatment, and basic sanitation support so that every system consistently delivers safe, drinkable water to the communities it serves.

3. Community Ownership & Engagement: Establish and train local water committees, women’s groups, and youth leaders to manage tariffs, oversee maintenance, and participate in decision-making—ensuring that projects are owned and sustained by the community.

4. Technological Innovation: Implement modern tools such as prepaid water ATMs, solar pumping, and remote monitoring to increase efficiency, transparency, and uptime while keeping water affordable for low-income families.

5. Financial Sustainability & Accessibility: Secure funding and partnerships to cover upfront infrastructure costs while designing fair, community-approved payment models that keep systems running, protect the most vulnerable households, and uphold financial transparency and accountability.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

The following factors are crucial to creating and maintaining the sustained success and impact of Starrus Foundation:

   1. Community Engagement & Ownership

Actively involve community members at every stage—from site selection to governance—so that water systems reflect local priorities and are cared for as shared assets.

2. Strategic Partnerships

Forge strong partnerships with local governments, utilities, NGOs, private sector partners, and faith and community leaders to leverage resources, expertise, and long-term support for sustainable water projects.

3. Adaptability & Continuous Learning

Remain flexible and responsive, learning from each project, incorporating community feedback, and adjusting our approaches to meet evolving needs and changing environments.

 4. Transparent Communication & Accountability

Maintain open, honest communication with donors, partners, and communities by sharing clear updates on progress, challenges, and impact—and by practicing rigorous financial and operational accountability.

5. Responsible Financial Stewardship

Manage resources wisely to maximize the impact of every dollar invested, ensuring that funds are directed toward durable infrastructure, local capacity-building, and long-term system performance.
